Thru-hike Switzerland

The Via Alpina 1 is a part of the larger Via Alpina network, which spans eight countries and features five classic trans-Alpine hiking routes. The Via Alpina 1, often referred to as the Green Trail, cuts through Switzerland, taking hikers on a 395-kilometer (242-mile) journey through some of the most picturesque alpine scenery in Europe.

Starting in Gaflei just above Vaduz, Liechtenstein, and ending in Montreux, Switzerland, this trail traverses steep mountain passes, lush valleys, and alpine villages. Along the way, you’ll experience diverse ecosystems, rich wildlife, and the unique culture of the Swiss Alps.

The scenic journey from Meiringen to Lenk is a very nice experience for hikers seeking to explore the unique landscapes of Switzerland. This is also well known as the BĂ€rentrek a 120 kilometer long trail from which is a part of the Via Alpina 1, maybe the best part and a very good option if you don’t have the time for the whole length of the Via Alpina. See this as a section-hike through the Jungrau Region.

As you’re know hiking in Bernese Oberland you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch and pristine Alpine meadows. You’ll hike through charming Swiss villages like Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen following the course of the rivers. En route, you’ll witness snow-capped peaks, dense forests, and cascading waterfalls to see the natural beauty of this region. One absolute highlight will be your stay in the blĂŒemlisalphĂŒtte at almost 3000 meter. Make sure you book your overnight stay at this pretty mountain hut.

Best Time to Hike

The ideal time to embark on the Via Alpina 1 is during the summer months, typically from June to September. During this period, the weather is generally more predictable, and the trail is less likely to be obstructed by snow.

Good to know when planning your journey along the Via Alpina 1 in Switzerland is that the trail is well-marked with red and white signs, making navigation relatively straightforward.
