Three days on the Eifelsteig
- Elmar Teegelbeckers

If you’re looking for a multi-day trek that balances natural beauty with historical charm, the Eifel region in Germany offers an excellent option. This three-day adventure combines two scenic stages of the Eifelsteig with the unique Burgenklettersteig, offering a variety of landscapes, trails and a climbing experience.
For us Dutchies, the Eifelsteig is a perfect long-distance trail to hike in sections. It’s only a few hours drive but it feels like a different world! We know for sure everyone has a trail like this, close to home and perfect for a “local” adventure!
The Eifelsteig is a Top Trails of Germany hike and very well-known in the Eifel region, as it runs 313 kilometers through the (vulkan)Eifel in western Germany.
It’s a great option if you enjoy the forest, old historic towns, even old volcanic formations and crater lakes, called the Maare.
Along the way, you pass by castles, abbeys and ruins that show the area’s history. It’s a perfect trail for the beginning long-distance hiker as there are enough shops and villages along the way and for us, it is the perfect section-hike!
We hiked a few stages of the Eifelsteig last month and we will give you a small recap.
Eifelsteig Stage 11 – from Daun to Manderscheid
Stage 11 of the Eifelsteig begins in Daun, a small town known for its volcanic heritage. The trail meanders through forests and open meadows with frequent views of the Maare lakes—crater lakes formed by volcanic activity million years ago. Some of the viewpoints call for a short break.
As you approach Manderscheid, the landscape becomes hillier, leading you to the town’s famous castles. Manderscheid is home to two medieval fortresses, the Oberburg and Niederburg one perched above the other, offering an amazing backdrop to end our first day.
Eifelsteig Stage 12 – from Manderscheid to Kloster Himmerod
The second stage takes us deeper into the peaceful Eifel countryside. This stretch is known for its quiet valleys and easier trails along the way.
The highlight of the day is Kloster Himmerod, a Cistercian monastery nestled in a secluded valley. This historic site is perfect for a reflective pause before you settle down for the night. Don’t miss the chance to sample the monastery’s baked goods or beer, crafted using traditional recipes.
Burgenklettersteig – the climb
For our final day, the Burgenklettersteig offers a different kind of challenge. This via ferrata-style trail near Manderscheid is not for the faint of heart, with its metal rungs, cables, and ladders providing an adventurous twist. The effort is rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding hills and the castle ruins. Please only embark on this klettersteig if you have the experience and material. More information you can find here.
If climbing isn’t your style, there are gentler paths nearby that still offer beautiful views.
