Thru-hiking trails

The GR20 is one of Europe’s hardest through hikes. This 180-kilometer, 15-stage trail stretches across the length of the island of Corsica. It begins in Calenzana, near the capital of Calvi, and ends in Conca in the south. In these two weeks, you pass through rugged cliffs, jutting peaks, alpine lakes, sea views, and more. Talk about variety!

Monte Cinto

The first few segments of the trek are low in kilometers but high in altimeters. In the first three days, you hike only 25 kilometers total but will climb out of town straight into the mountains, over 1500 meters in the first day alone. And be ready for the highest pass of the trail on segment four – Monte Cinto. The pass is at 2706 meters and requires scrambling to reach. But once you finish segment four, supposedly the hardest days of the trail are behind you.

Steady rhythm

From segment five, you wander through pine forests and mountain lakes, what seems like a dream after the strenuous peaks of the first few days. Get ready for some serious descent though, segment six is almost completely descending from Refuge de Ciottulu di I Mori. By segment eight, you begin climbing again toward Lac de Capitellu and Lac du Melo. Take care of thunderstorms, as this is a high, exposed ridge.

Choosing your path

You now reach the halfway point, where many hikers will decide that they no longer want to continue. The trail traffic thins out and you have more space for your tent. The hardest section of the trail is behind you, and there are only great views, forests, and fairytale-worthy trails ahead of you. There are, of course, still many difficult climbs, but the end is near.

In the last three segments of the trail, be ready for loose scrambles and stunning vistas, followed by steep descents, a common pattern on the GR20. Beware of the weather, and don’t take any unnecessary risks where lightning is concerned. Finish up the trail by deciding to take the low-level or alpine variant trail between Refuge d’Asinau to Village de Bavella/Refure de Paliri.

Finally, you descend into Conca. Enjoy walking through the olive groves as you descend to the coast.

When to hike:

The refuges are open from June – September. This is a popular trail, so make sure you book your space in advance. In May there still be snow, and by October many of the refuges will close, which means you’ll need to carry your food.

Do not forget:

We have created a complete gear list for thru-hikers, make sure to follow it and add any other items you know will be helpful for you.

Good to know:

The GR20 is one of the most famous, and most difficult, trails in Europe. Be ready to wait in a queue when the trail becomes too busy to continue at your normal pace. There are many emergency helicopters providing rescue services to hikers – be safe and careful to avoid being one of them!
