In one of the smallest countries in Europe, Luxembourg, you will find the 112 kilometer long Müllerthal Trail. It is not a long thru-hike where you cross the country, but is surprisingly beautiful trails through forests, large rocks and small rivers. Hike along picturesque villages such as Berdorf and Beaufort with their beautiful castles and pitch your tent at one of the many campsites. Of course you can also stay in one of the many other accommodations, as well.

A trail of loops
The Müllerthal Trail consists of three loops of approximately 38 kilometers each. These “loops” overlap here and there, meaning that you can start almost anywhere. There are several villages along the trails and sometimes you walk through a larger village where you can buy food and drinks.
- Route 1: 36 kilometer | intermediate| starting point: Echternach
- Route 2: 38 kilometer | hard | starting point: Berdorf
- Route 3: 38 kilometer | hard | starting point: Beaufort
Many hikers do not walk the trail in one go or in succession, but take beautiful daily stages of +/- 15 to 20 kilometers. You have the option to walk in a circle or from point A to point B. The great thing about Luxembourg is that public transport is free and there is an excellent network of bus connections. So you can always easily return to the place where you started.
Rocks, forest and wonderful trails
The trail is characterized by the many boulders that are found in the area. These are large rock formations that you encounter along the way. There is something magical about walking through the vast forests and passing by or even through a large rock formation. The routes are also excellently marked. It is therefore no wonder that the Müllerthal Trail has been listed as Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe since 2014.
Additional trails
If you are not done with walking after the three loops, you can indulge yourself with the extra tours that the Müllerthal region has set out.
- Müllerthal Trail Extra Tour A: 22 kilometer | intermediate
- Müllerthal Trail Extra Tour A: 13 kilometer | intermediate
- Müllerthal Trail Extra Tour A: 9 kilometer | easy
- Müllerthal Trail Extra Tour A: 31.5 kilometer | intermediate
You can also easily link the additional tours to one of the three main routes or run them as a separate day hike. So there are plenty to choose from!
Good to know
It is best to walk the trail in the early or late season, in the months March to May or September/October. The advantage is that it is a bit quieter and you can walk in the beautiful spring or autumn. The temperature is also very pleasant for hiking. Make sure you bring good rain gear, just in case! There are plenty of accommodations, but it is best to book in advance. It can be busy especially on weekends. The great thing about the Müllerthal region is that there are plenty of camping spots to pitch your tent. Wild camping is unfortunately not allowed.
