The Westweg is a beautiful thru-hike that takes you through the Black Forest in Germany. This long-distance hike is about 285 kilometers long and runs from Pforzheim to Basel. The trail follows the ridge of the Black Forest and you pass through fairytale forests, whilst occasionally climbing some peaks in this low mountain range where you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It is one of the oldest long-distance trails in Germany and was opened in 1900. Recently, the trail has become very popular with both German and Dutch hikers. And not without reason of course! The trail is well maintained and marked, and therefore one of the Top Trails of Germany. It is a good hike for beginning long-distance hikers looking for a more challenging long-distance hike.
Long-distance hike through the Black Forest
The Westweg starts in Pforzheim and leads through forests over hills to the 1277-meter-high Feldberg, the highest mountain in the Black Forest. The trail offers beautiful views of the mountains and valleys around. The Feldberg is a nice place to enjoy the surroundings and rest before continuing to the Westweg.
From the Feldberg, the path continues south through the valley of the Wiese and the Wehra, past lakes, and waterfalls. The trail continuously ascends and descends through the Black Forest and offers some challenging ascents and descents. There are plenty of small towns and cities along the way to stop and stock up on some supplies or stay overnight. You can also spend the night at camping spots along the trail. As the hike progresses, the views become more and more spectacular. The trail runs through the Kandertal valley and offers beautiful views of the river and surrounding mountains. The last stage of the Westweg runs through the Hochblauenberg and ends in Basel, a nice last stop on the trail to recover from all the impressions.
Two routes
If you walk the Westweg you have the choice to take the Eastern or Western route. The Eastern route is the easier one, while the Western route offers you more challenging stages and climbs. This last variant also takes you over the highest peaks of the Westweg.
Best time of the year
The best time to walk the Westweg is between May and October. The weather is usually mild and there are plenty of accommodation options along the trail. Some close in winter but most camping spots open from May onwards. The Westweg can be completed in about two weeks, but some walkers choose to do the walk in smaller stages. The total elevation gain on the Westweg is approximately 8,000 meters.
Good to know
If you plan to walk the Westweg, make sure to prepare well. To prepare, make sure you have the right equipment, including sturdy hiking boots and a waterproof jacket. View the complete thru-hiking packing list here. Additionally, bring enough water and food for the journey, as there are not always facilities along the trail. Also don’t forget to book your accommodation in advance, especially in the high season when it can be a bit busier.
