Madeira

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, closer to Africa than Europe, you can find the Portuguese island, Madeira. A true gem that is known for its rich flora & fauna, steep mountains, rough coastline, and many levadas. It’s a hidden hiker’s paradise with an amazing thru-hike during which you cross the island from east to west. In 115 kilometres, you hike from Porto Moniz on the east coast to Machico on the west coast. It is a challenging hike that will reward you with amazing views after each new mountain ridge.

From ultra-trail to thru-hike

Originally, this trail was an ultra-trail for trail runners, who are able to complete the whole trail in 15 to 30 hours. Amazing of course, however, not feasible for everyone. What makes it even more impressive are the 7000 altimeters that encompass the trail. At the same time, this is why the ultra-trail is becoming more popular with thru-hikers. In approximately 6 days and 20 kilometres per day, you can thru-hike the same trail. There are not many accommodation options along the trail, therefore it is best to take your own (lightweight) tent. This ensures you do not have to leave the already tough trail.

Camping under Pico Ruivo

One of the highlights of the trail is camping just below the peak of the Pico Ruivo. This peak is the island’s highest point with an altitude of 1862 meters. You can find a small campsite where you are allowed to, literally, pitch your tent above the clouds. During the sunset and sunrise, you can walk to the top to enjoy some amazing views. And as a little cherry on the pie, the next day you continue to hike on one of the prettiest trails (PR1) to the peak of the second-highest mountain on the island, the Pico Arieiro.

Don’t forget

We have created a thru-hiking gear list, which you can find here.
Below are some items you definitely should not forget when hiking this trail:
Camping gear: you can find some amazing spots to camp alongside this trail, however, it is recommended to take a warm sleeping bag with you. It can get cold at night when the sun’s gone.
Rain gear: due to its location in the Atlantic Ocean it can get very wet on the island (if you are unlucky).
Sunscreen & sunglasses: these are needed to protect yourself against the sun, which has a very high strength on Madeira.

Best time to travel

The best time to hike this trail is in April or May. The island is in full blossom and the chances of any rain are low. During the summer it can get very hot and during the winter it can get cold, which can affect your trip if you are camping.

Good to know

This thru-hike is not an easy one! There are more than 7000 altimeters, which will challenge your body. It is important to make sure you are well-trained and that you are able to carry the extra weight of your camping gear. Be prepared for every type of weather; one day it can be rainy and the next it can be sunny and moist. Make sure to put on sunscreen, even if it is cloudy. On the trails around Pico Ruivo and Pico Arieiro, it can be more crowded during the high season. Start early or later in the day to avoid crowds. Lastly, if you are afraid of heights, this trail might not be the one for you. Make sure that you are well-prepared so you can enjoy one of the most beautiful trails out there!

Happy trails!
