Peaks of the Balkans Trail Albanië

In the Balkans, you can find the Peaks of the Balkans Trail. This long-distance hike takes you across three countries in 192 kilometers. You walk in a circle through Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. The trail has 10 sections and can be hiked in 10-13 days. In total, you will walk 10.000 altimeters, where some parts of the trail will ascend to 2300 meters! You get to know the rugged and inhospitable mountains of the Balkans. This trail is relatively unknown, which means you will not encounter many other hikers. Walk over old shepherd trails and discover their beauty with your tent or stay in accommodations with the local people. They will welcome you with open arms!

The Peaks of the Balkans trail was developed to boost the economy and tourism of this remote area in the Accursed Mountains. Additionally, it is created to break the boundaries between the countries. The region has a very turbulent history, but this trail can make a difference for the locals. Another reason to hike this amazing trail.

Tip: you can easily book this trail via The Balkan Trail.

Albania

You can start the trail in any of the three countries, but most hikers choose to start in Theth. This little village with views on the high Balkan peaks is a great start to this thru-hike. You immediately start to climb 1000 meters up to Valbona pass, only to descend 700 meters immediately afterward. It is fair to say that this is a good sneak peek of the rest of the trail. For the next three days, you hike in Albania via ancient donkey and shepherd pathways towards the border with Kosovo. One steep climb takes you to the highest point of the trail at nearly 2300 meters.

Kosovo

For the next few days, you hike in Kosovo. This part of the trail stands out because of the many altimeters. You will climb to a mountain pass, only to descend again to the place you will sleep repeatedly. If you want, you can split the sections into two days to make it a little bit easier for your knees. After three days of hiking in Kosovo and a final climb towards the Jelenak pass at 2272 meters, you reach the border with Montenegro.

Montenegro

The last three days of the trail are in amazing Montenegro. Hike alongside crystal clear lakes and work those calf muscles once again. This will happen when you arrive in Plav. Here you need to climb more than 1000 meters to reach Bor Peak at 2106 meters. One final, but very long, section of 21 kilometers takes you from Vusanje back to Theth in Albania. After 10 to 13 days of hiking thru this amazing mountain region, you have the option to stay a little longer to relax and enjoy the Adriatic Coast of Albania or Montenegro.

Good to know

The trail can be started in Theth (Albania), Plav (Montenegro), or Pejë (Kosovo). The Peaks of the Balkans trail is a physical challenge in remote areas. Make sure you are physically fit and that you can hike 7 to 8 hours per day. Train on ascending and descending with the weight of your gear. Here you can read tips for optimal preparation. Do not forget to take your hiking poles for the many mountains you will pass. The weather in the mountains can be very unpredictable, so take a look at this gear list to prepare yourself. The best time to hike the trail is from June to October. In spring or autumn, there can be snow on the trails (and sometimes even in summer!). Make sure to bring enough water, at least 2-3 liters, because it can be hot during the summer. Happy trails!
