Rota Vicentina

The Rota Vicentina is a network of trails in Portugal. Almost 750 kilometers of hiking paths take you thru this South-European country. It might not be one of the most well-known hiking trails out there, but it is one of the best-kept secrets in Europe. You hike along the rugged coastline from Santiago de CacĂ©m in the North to the Cape of Sao Vicente in the South. The trail can be hiked from North to South or the other way around. The Rota Vicentina takes you to some unknown mountain ranges and areas. The Alentejo province, where the trail is located, is perfect to discover on foot. You can choose various options: the Historical Way, the Fisherman’s Trail, and if that wasn’t enough, you can also choose to add sections to the main trails.

Historical Way

Historical Way

The longest trail is the Historical Way. You hike from Santiago de CacĂ©m to Cape of Sao Vicente in 263 kilometers divided into 12 sections of max. 25 kilometers. The trail is well-marked and easily accessible, also for less-experienced hikers. You walk inland across lower mountain ranges, valleys, and quaint villages. There is a reason this trail has won the title “Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe” multiple times. Fun Fact: the way is actually a part of the GR11/ E9, which goes from Sagres to St. Petersburg.

Fisherman’s Trail

If you prefer hiking along the coastline, the Fishermen’s Trail is the one for you. This trail is only accessible for hikers (which we like!) and is somewhat more strenuous due to the sandy trails. In 13 sections, you hike 226 kilometers from S. Torpes to Meren. You have a never-ending view of the Atlantic Ocean, and the salty smell of the sea will always be there. The trail takes you thru a protected nature reserve with a vulnerable ecosystem. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to stay on the path. The trail is very well-marked from beginning to end.

Want to add sections?

Not done walking? Then you have the option to enjoy the area a little more on one of the 24 circulair trails between Santiago de Cacém and Lagos. These trails start and finish on the same point and have a max. length of 16 kilometres. In most cases it will take you half a day to complete the hikes. One of the recommended trails is the Carrapateira Cliffs. This trails starts in the village of Carrapateira and takes you on a 10.5 kilometre hike across the dunes. You pass old ruines from Islamic villages known for their fishing and have amazing views on the rugged cliffs.

Fisherman's Trail

Good to know

The trails are very well marked and there are plenty of accommodation and supply options along the way. Keep in mind that it can be very hot during the summer. Thus make sure to carry enough water and protection against the sun. The best season to hike the trail is from September to June. During the winter months it usually doesn’t get any colder than 11 degrees Celsius. On the Fisherman’s Trail wild camping is not allowed, due to the vulnerability of the nature. On the Historical Way you can ask land owners for permission to put your tent on their land. Additionally, there are some campgrounds on the trail. For the Fisherman’s Trail it is important to be in good physical shape: there will be a lot of (loose)sand! Click here to learn more about how to prepare your body for long distance hiking.
