The Stezka Českem, or Czech Trail, navigates 2000+ kilometers around the Czech Republic and is a chance to hike in the center of the continent. The southern trail is 1000+ kilometers from the eastern border to the western-most point of the country. This trek is not for the faint of heart and is a great look into the history and culture of the region.
Beskydy – Javorníky Mountain Ranges
Explore an enchanting hidden gem in Czechia that begins at the easternmost point of the country and traverses the breathtaking Beskydy mountain range, leading you to the captivating Javorníky mountains frozen in time. Near the town of Vyškovec, it merges with the renowned Cesta hrdinů SNP (Slovak National Uprising Heroes Trail), becoming your companion all the way to the village of Javorník. Throughout your journey, civilization will feel like a distant memory. Traverse a remarkable distance of 93 kilometers, encountering a succession of invigorating ascents and descents akin to the previous section.
Dolnomoravský úval (Valley)
Experience the captivating valley nestled amidst mountains as you embark on this section of the trail. Although the trail begins with a mountainous ambiance near Sudoměřice, starting from km 30, you’ll find yourself traversing picturesque lowlands. Prepare for a change in terrain as the final part of the Karpaty Range opens up into a vast plain, saying farewell to the challenging inclines that tested your endurance. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking natural reserve of Pálava as you approach the charming town of Mikulov, marking the culmination of this awe-inspiring journey.
Podyjí – Along the River Dyje

The Czech Canada
Embark on a captivating journey through one of the shorter sections, brimming with remarkable highlights for exploration. Immerse yourself in the wonders of Vranovská přehrada (Reservoir Dam), the majestic Landštejn Castle, the Renaissance charm of Slavonice town with its historic houses, and the landscapes of Czech Canada. From there, follow the red trail to the magnificent Landštejn Castle. With its predominantly flat terrain, this section can be comfortably traversed in just three days. This makes it an ideal choice for hikers who have been exploring for an extended period.
Novohradské Mountain Range and Southern Šumava Mountains
Explore an exceptional section boasting an abundance of picturesque ponds, meandering creeks, glistening streams, enticing restaurants, and well-equipped campsites. Prepare for an array of distractions to satisfy your senses. Spanning an impressive 124 kilometers, this route features gentle hills that provide a pleasurable sensation, ensuring your feet remain invigorated rather than fatigued.
Southern Šumava stretches from the lowlands to the southernmost tip of Czechia. As you ascend gradually, the section unfolds its true character, transforming into a captivating mountainous terrain starting from the village of Přední Zvonková. Prepare for an authentic mountain experience that awaits you ahead. The culmination of this section unveils a crest trail, tracing the path from Smrčina to Plechý, offering a proper finale to your adventure.
Šumava Mountains
Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the central part of the Šumava Mountains, renowned as one of the most stunning segments along the entire thru-hike. This captivating trail leads you to majestic peaks, enchanting abandoned village ruins, and secluded spots that evoke a sense of tranquility. You’ll also encounter popular tourist hubs like Modrava, bustling with activity. The Šumava National Park Administration has established a network of emergency overnight campsites (EOCs), allowing you to rest and continue your journey the next day.
Explore the captivating finale of Šumava National Park, adorned with stunning lakes and crowned by the breathtaking 1293-meter peak of Ostrý. It offers tireless hikers unrivaled panoramic views. Beyond Ostrý, the trail guides you into the enchanting realm of Domažlice, where you’ll enter the Český les Natural Reserve. Český les (The Czech Forest)
Discover the captivating Český les (The Czech Forest), the final or inaugural section of the Southern Stezka Českem . This deserted trail runs along the border, immersing you in serene woodlands as the name implies. While it occasionally features lengthy, straight stretches without trees, they typically offer a firm surface for ease of travel. Although this trail won’t lead you to the Earth’s core, it may transport you to the symbolic center of Europe. If this marks the end of your journey, it presents a manageable section to conclude on a high note.
Good to know
It is technically not allowed to wild camp in the Czech Republic, but if you practice Leave No Trace and are quiet, then you should have no problems camping along this trail. Here is a list of campsites and shelters along the trail.
The stretch between Dolní Cazov and Dolní Silnice za Novým Údolím is currently closed until May 31. Exercise caution, as mapy.cz may redirect you off the correct route. Refer to the provided itinerary for precise details on the accurate path to follow.
